River Mice June Paddles- NEWSLETTER INCORRECT!!
JUNE PADDLES
Somehow, the newsletter got some bum information. Here is the real scoop on the River Mice paddles for June.
As with all Mice paddles, email Jeff if you are going. If we know you are coming, we’ll wait for you. If not, we won’t. Times may change for tides or particpation. Also, keep checking your email and this blog for other impromptu paddles. We're always trying to get out on the water!
June 5 Sunday (time may be TBA)
Lynnhaven Inlet Paddle
Time: 11:00am
This paddle is always a favorite. Put in is at the Lynnhaven Boat Ramp on the west side of the Lesner Bridge. We paddle around some kayak-friendly areas in Lynnhaven Bay, then head over to Bubbas for a snack and beverage before returning to the boat ramp. This paddle is suitable for all but the raw beginner- crossing the channels can be a little tricky.
June 21 (Tuesday)
Summer Solstice Paddle at Owl’s Creek
Time: 6:00pm
Put in at the Owl’s Creek Boat Ramp on General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach. Celebrate the longest day of the year with a relaxing paddle behind the Marine Science Museum. We will stop at one of the Rudee Inlet eateries for a snack and beverage before paddling back to take-out. This paddle always has good wildlife, and is great for beginners.
June 25 or 26 (Sat or Sun)
Munden Point to West Neck- VB Scenic Waterway
Time: 10:00am
This year, the River Mice are going to try to paddle the length of the Virginia Beach Scenic Waterway- from Munden Park to Lynnhaven Inlet. The first step is this one, on the North Landing River and West Neck Creek. It is about 8 miles for the whole paddle, or about 3-1/2 miles to the Pungo Ferry Bridge. You will need to have some paddling experience, as we may be dealing with boat wakes on the river, and about 3-4 hours of paddling. The Pungo Ferry option is available for those who don’t want to go the whole way.

Jerry Tends to His Fire
As with any Mogul camping expedition, one of the highlights of the Knotts Island weekend was Jerry's campfire. This time, he used "tossable" pieces of firewood, so he rarely had to leave his comfortable seat!
Mice in Knotts Island
We set up camp at the Sandy Point Resort, a campground right at the state line on the way to Knotts Island. Our sites were right on the North Landing River- just a beautiful place!
We were looking to do a Sunday morning paddle to an island in the middle of the river, but the southwest wind was a little too strong. So we relaxed and enjoyed a leisurely breakfast before packing up and heading home.
Lamarr is Ready to Go!
It is all in the preparation! PFD, check! Paddle, check! Floppy hat to keep the sun off your ears? Check!
Into the Water at Knotts Island!
The first event of the year for the River Mice was the Knotts Island camping/paddling/wine tasting event. Put in for the paddle on Saturday was near the Moonrise Bay Vineyards. Lamarr couldn't wait to get in the water, and consequently had to wait for the other twelve boats to put in.
It was an open water paddle, and a rather strong wind kicked up the water a little bit. At the worst, we encountered foot-and-a half waves. It was a nice sunny day to be on the water other than that!
