Four intrepid Mice ventured to the Eastern Shore on a soggy weekend, hoping to get a good paddle in. After the torrential downpour of late Friday afternoon, it wasn't looking likely; but the rain pretty much held off after that, and gave us a window around lunchtime of Saturday to squeeze in a paddle.

It was probably too soggy for tent camping, but it wasn't too bad for those with a camper. The rain held off long enough for a fire each night, and was light enough for a trip into Cape Charles after the paddle.

Around Raccoon Island

The paddle was the traditional one for Kiptopeke, around Raccoon Island after putting in at the wildlife refuge. Half of the paddle is in the navigation channel between the mainland and the island, and half in the open water between the island and the ocean and outer barrier islands.

We also took a look at Skidmore Island before noticing some advancing showers and heading back to take-out. It drizzled for about half of the paddle and the wind was pretty light- not the best paddling weather, but not bad!

Sandbar

Since we were out once again at low tide, we had to avoid the substantial sandbar on the far side of the island. We paddled out far enough that we thought we were going to nearby Smith Island. We remembered a lesson learned on an earlier Kiptopeke trip- If birds are standing, it is probably too shallow to paddle.

Cormorant

For those who stuck it out, (and the cormorant didn't) it was a nice paddle around Raccoon Island, and a not so soggy camping weekend.

Smithfield Waterways Paddle 9/18/2011

One intrepid mouse went paddling on Sunday at Smithfield, despite the ominous clouds and sprinkly weather. Put in was at Windsor Castle Park.

The wind dictated the direction of the paddle. If you paddle into the wind to start with, the wind will help you back when you get tired. In this case, going against the wind led to the town of Smithfield.

It doesn't get any easier than this. Set your boat on the rails, hop in, and slide into the water. One of the nicest facilities you will find for kayaking.

A mini-nor'easter was just finishing it's roll through the area. It sprinkled on the way up to Smithfield, it sprinkled on the way back. During the paddle it was just overcast and a steady wind from the east. Turning up a few side creeks gave a break from the hard pull against the wind. Of course, the trip back to take-out was much easier.

The Pagan River branches off the James and winds its way up to downtown Smithfield. The river continues up to the meat packing plant. When the wind is blowing right, as it was this day, you can smell the pork products!

Ready to Take Out

The view from the water coming back to the dock. Just put the nose of your boat in the middle, and use the rails to pull yourself up on the rollers. Then you can just step out.

A little on the windy side, but dry- a nice paddle!

Ooops! Forgot to post this paddle!

Six mice met at Bennett's Creek Park in Suffolk for an evening paddle up the creek towards the Nansemond River. Evening paddles are generally very relaxed and peaceful. The wind has calmed down, the late-day light is mellower, and it is just great to get out on the water after a day at work.

A tradition on our Bennett's Creek paddle is a stop at the Harborside restaurant for a quick beverage. We use the boat ramp next to the restaurant, stow our boats out of the way, and head to the bar!

After the refreshment stop, we put in for the final 20 minutes back to take-out. It wasn't as dark as it looks in this picture of Sue, but it was getting there!

Halfway back, it started pouring rain, and we pulled in to the boat ramp soaking wet and laughing.

Close to the peak of Irene, and the tidal surge is moving up Mowbray Arch in Ghent. I'd love to paddle it, but with 40-50 mph winds, I'd wind up in North Carolina!

SEVENTEEN mice met at Sue's place out in Suffolk, and headed over to Lake Meade for a paddle, to be followed by a cookout. It was a long line of cars that made the two-mile trip.

Thanks to Sue for suggesting the put-in, and for hosting a great cookout afterwards. Lots of great food and fun with friends!

Nine early rising Moguls met at John's house Sunday morning, July 31st. Meet time was 8:30, as recommended by John. We were rewarded with a quiet river- few powerboats, no lawnmowers, and some good nature sightings.

You never know what boat Jim will bring, but this seventeen footer is one of his favorites. It is a touring boat- longer and narrower than most of our boats, with no rudder. It goes straight better, but is a little more challenging to turn. Jim makes it look easy, though.

Six Moguls made it out to the end of Mill Landing Road in Virginia Beach for the Nanney's Creek paddle. It was a beautiful day for a great paddle.

Put in is at a rustic Fish and Wildlife service boat ramp with plenty of parking. There is about 100 yards of open water on Back Bay before reaching the mouth of the creek.

Sandy and Peggy are enjoying a brief pause in the paddling.

This is our third year paddling Nanney's Creek. Each year, we paddled to the bridge and turned around. This year, Peggy pushed the envelope- wanting to see the other side. Here she is seen making the return trip after the other paddlers declined to make the trip.

On September 26th, 2010, four able mice paddled the West Neck Creek in mid-soutern Virginia beach. We put in at the West Neck Marina, and paddled north. It was a cloudy day, with rain in the forecast. The clouds served to keep the heat away, making for a very comfortable day on the water.

The West Neck Creek that we paddled has three faces. Near the marina, it is wide, with lots of side creeks. After about a mile, it narrows down some and meanders. It still feels like a natural watercourse. Finally, at Indian River Road, the creek turns into a straight channel, man made.

Nine mice ventured to southern Chesapeake on a late Sunday morning for a paddle on Smith Creek and the Northwest River. Put in was at the Baum Road small boat launch, a small clearing at the end of the creek.

The creek winds its way for a mile to the Northwest River. Our trip took us around Northwest River Park to Indian Creek, another pretty, winding creek.

It was a beautiful day for a paddle, sunny and about 80.

We had lunch at Northwest River Park, one of our finest lunch facilities. Picnic tables, toilets, and a nice place to pull up our boats.

He doesn't look it, but Karl is quite the nimble fellow, even after a beer or two. Here he demonstrates his entry technique. Just walk onto the boat and sit down! Not even a wobble.

We were treated to beautiful scenery that rarely changed. The grassy banks that Ricky the Rat looked at stayed the same for almost the entire paddle. Many of us quickly noticed the lack of birds. We saw one heron at the end of the paddle, and a couple of large birds of prey flying around above.

Our lunch stop was at a dock erected by the Nature Conservancy. it is usable as a put-in, if you don't mind a half-mile portage down a poorly maintained trail. Nine of us found places to relax on the small dock, but Jerry decided to stay in his boat.

According to Jerry's GPS, we covered 6.9 miles, in about 2 hours and 40 minutes of paddling time.

Eight brave Mice ventured into the windy Owl Creek for our annual evening paddle. It was an adventure, as a strong northeast wind turned the normally calm creek and inlet into a bumpy slog. Moving against the wind was a challenge, moving with the wind was easy. The tide was also very high, meaning we were able to get into places we normally wouldn't.

But the rains never came, staying to the west. they got as close as Pembroke and Lynnhaven, but we never felt a drop.

Our paddle takes us past a tiki bar, located across a small creek from Rockefeller's. Each year, the owners do a little more to improve it. It has grown from four stools to more than ten. This creek was a small respite from the constant wind.

We made it back to take out at sunset, deciding to forego the night portion of the paddle. Even though the weather was improving, we didn't want to chance it after dark.

Despite the iffy forecast, the weather stayed decent, and we had a good, though slightly shorter paddle!

Thirteen Mice took to the water from the City of Chesapeake's Elizabeth River Boat Landing and Park, located at the foot of Poindexter Street, where the Jordan Bridge used to go. This was a paddle unlike most of our others, an "industrial paddle" down the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and Paradise Creek in Portsmouth.

Our paddle took us by what looked like a grain facility, a gravel facility, a trash facility, and the naval shipyard, among other industrial facilities. We paddled near the remains of the Jordan Bridge, and close to two other railroad bridges. We also passed by a couple of ships and barges.

It was a different way of feeling small, with our tiny kayaks close to all of these large manmade objects. They are much easier to comprehend from a car, or just from standing on land. In a kayak, down low on the water, it is a different story. It was also amazing to see how much water a powerboat that usually lives on a trailer in someone's backyard can kick up while speeding down the river.

On some of our paddles deeper into nowhere, one can stand up, and be the tallest thing for a mile around. On this paddle, we saw and felt the reverse. Not the most beautiful paddle, but interesting anyway.

Paradise Creek in Portsmouth goes by the shipyard's trash-to-steam plant, run by SPSA. We could smell the unique scents of the SPSA transfer facility, and saw garbage trucks going to and from it.

To a great day on the water with friends. Occasionally, our paddles will involve a watering hole or other bit of local flavor. Lynnhaven inlet usually means Bubba's, Bennett's Creek means the Harborside. Nobody was familiar with the South Norfolk neighborhood we paddled from, so Cogan's in Ghent was the choice.

Ten Moguls, including five Mice ventured out to Caldwell WV to participate in the Greenbrier Challenge, a bike ride that supports the Challenged Athletes of West Virginia. We rode along the Greenbrier River Trail, a converted railroad right-of-way. Riders chose their distance, from 11 to 33 miles, and made their way along the scenic trail.

Debbie and Chris prepare their bikes for the ride ahead. It was a beautiful day for a ride, sunny and around 80. There was plenty of shade on the trail, and a small breeze.

Several of the riders in the event were like those that Challenged Athletes helps, and used hand bikes or other adaptive cycles to help them move down the course.

The Greenbrier Challenge was based at a driving range in Caldwell. after the ride, participants could take a challenge of a different sort. Pitching, chipping putting and driving skills were tested. It was all part of the "Trigolfathon."

A lot of Mice (15?) convened at the Horn Point canoe and kayak launch in Virginia Beach. It is located on the west side of the north end of Back Bay, a few miles south of Pungo. We paddled up two different creeks before stopping for lunch.

Karl led us to a campground just off Asheville Creek where he has parked his trailer for the summer. We were able to pull right up to his waterfront site and eat lunch.

Horn Point is a great place to launch, with plenty of options for paddling, and good parking.

The large crowd of paddlers, (including a three year old boy!) had a great time.

For what is probably the last paddle of the season, eleven mice ventured down to Merchant's Millpond State Park on Gates County, NC for a day on the water. Especially for November, it was a beautiful day, with highs in the mid 60's.

The millpond is a spectacular location, with cypress trees, spanish moss, and plenty of wildlife.

Much of the pond was covered in a thick coat of green duckweed, or algae. It stuck to everything, and slowed us down. We were constantly knocking the weeds off of our paddles. If you stopped for any amount of time, the green stuff seemed to close in on you. Adding to the navigational challenges were lilies, floating wood, and cypress roots hiding just below the surface!

There was very little wind, so if you were first in line, there were some nice views above the waterline, and reflected on the glassy surface. If you were in the green muck, you felt like you were in the middle of a golf course!

It is easy to get lost in Merchant's Millpond. To help people find their way to the canoe/kayak campgrounds, or back to the launch, there are orange and yellow floats to mark the way. As one member (who shall remain nameless) put it, you had to follow the ta-ta's!

Three mice decided to spend the night, and loaded their boats with tents, sleeping bags, food, and in Jerry's case, firewood!

This campout worked out much better than the last one, because the weather was great! Clear skies, and a night that didn't get too cold. For those that wonder, kayak camping is just like Fall Follies, except for the air mattresses, bicycles, cooking tents, crock pots, and well... You have friends sitting around a fire in a beautiful location, enjoying a nice beverage. What more do you need?

Sunday morning, Ali, Jerry and Jeff broke camp and took all of their stuff back to the boats at the group campground. Here, Ali poses with all of the supplies that three people need to spend a night on an island. Of course, they could have been like the group called the "Friends of Jay" in the next site over, and used a couple of john-boats to haul all of their gear!

I think all of us got the sense that we were in another world. The scenery is just so different from what we are used to. The gang, daytrippers and overnighters, had a great time, and it was definitely worth the trip!

Unless we put something together spur of the moment, it is "See you on the water", NEXT YEAR!

Merchant's Millpond is about 30 miles from Suffolk in North Carolina. A bit of a trip, but worth it! Plan on most of the day for this one, as we will spend around 4-5 hours at the park.

We will put in at about 10am from the boat ramp at the park, and paddle to our heart's content. The scenery will be some of the most unique and spectacular that we will paddle. Cypress trees are everywhere, so much so that there are colored floats in the water to help you find your way.

This paddle is a prime candidate for a little carpool action, if we can fit the boats, as it is a good distance away. Bring a picnic lunch, as we will stop at one of the paddle-in campgrounds to eat and stretch our legs. Bring your camera, as you will want to take plenty of pictures!

We will paddle if it is cold, but not in the rain. Those with sit-on-tops will need to think about this one, and keep your eye on the forecast, as we are pretty late in the season.

Let Jeff know if you are coming, and we will wait for you at the put-in.

And if you are interested in spending the night, let Jeff know. A few of us may pack our boats to camp at one of the paddle-in campsites, weather permitting, of course.

The mice made a now annual trip to Lotus Garden Park on Sandbridge Road to paddle the Lotus garden Loop. The paddle runs about 5-1/2 miles. We crossed the road and put in to the north, taking out upon completing the loop.

The gang stopped at the new Horn Point launch on back bay for a pit stop and to stretch our legs. Horn Point is just off of our loop trail, with access to Asheville Creek and the Back Bay.

A few parts of this paddle take us through a narrow creek, with overhanging trees. Beautiful stuff, but we have to go single file.

Lotus garden is one of our favorite paddles, with narrow creeks, winding rivers, and a little bit of open water. it is a loop, so we do everything just once. We even saw a bald eagle one year!

Ricky the Rat (who wants to be a mouse) has joined us on a few of our paddles. He is usually perched on the front of Jeff's kayak. Sometimes he would just rather stay in his perch on Jeff's dashboard. Either way, he is happy to be part of the group.

About ten mice made it to the second evening paddle of the season, meeting at the Owl's Creek Boat Ramp near the Virginia Aquarium. The paddle took us through Rudee Inlet, under the bridge, and back into the backyards of Croatan.

Once the sun sets, we turn on our "running lights" and explore some of the side creeks off of Lake Rudee.

This view is towards Rockefellers just after sunset. All of our lights are turned on so other boaters can see us.

After dark, we paddled up a few isolated creeks in search of fireflies, but apparently they were out of season. We pulled back in at around 9:15 after about an hour of night paddling.

This is always one of our more popular paddles. There is no set route, except for the stop at Bubba's. We just pick a place and go, then pick another place and go. Put in at the public boat ramp is simple, as there is a small beach located away from the powerboat ramp.

Our Lynnhaven Inlet paddles always include a lunch stop at Buba's on Shore Drive. We use their boat ramp, pulling our boats quickly out of the way, and order sandwiches and beverages at the restaurant.

Once we are done, we put in, and sprint across the channel avoiding the boats and strong current, and head back across to take out at the public boat ramp.

Eight Mice paddled the Virginia Beach Urban Loop on Sunday, October 25th, 2009. We roughly made a circle around the Lynnhaven Mall, paddling those waterways you always see and cross over in that area.

It was a departure from our usual paddles, as we went through the backyards of the industrial park and some older neighborhoods of the area.

It was cool (60 degrees) and windy, so most of us had jackets on (thanks Carol!), but it wasn't bad at all for a late season paddle!

Here, Tom and Jeanine paddle towards Lynnhaven Parkway. This spot is between Potters/Lynnhaven Road and Viking Drive, just south of the interstate.

We put in a the Hutton Circle dock, located behind the Pep Boys on Virginia Beach Boulevard, east of Lynnhaven. The dock is a bit strange, and rocks alot, depending on how you stand on it. Seems like the floats are only in the center of the dock!

Most of us, including Karl, found it easier to put in through the grass next to the dock.

After a wind assisted trip south down the large drainage channel behind Stihl and Lillian Vernon, we turned up London Bridge Creek, a quieter meander through the backyards near the Lynnhaven Mall. Trees are just starting to turn colors, as Ali, Jeanine and Karl lead the way.

Horst considers using the facilities in this unique backyard. Four commodes sit on the banks of London Bridge Creek, along with several fishing rod holders. You can sit and fish and drink beer, and never have to get up!

Twelve Mice gathered at the Hutton Circle dock for a paddle on a beautiful, sunny Sunday. The group chose to go north, up the Eastern Branch of the Lynnhaven River. We paddled up past Wolfsnare point, exploring a few of the side creeks. We then headed south down the Pinetree Branch before returning to the dock. We had a nice 2-1/2 hours out on the water

An unnamed rodent on the bow of Jeff's kayak is gazing at- well if you look carefully, you can see- cactus! Growing in one of the backyards along our paddle route. One of the more interesting sights along the way!
